Jacobsen, Antonio (American 1850-1921) Exceptional rare and important yacht racing scene, oil on board, signed and dated lower right: "Antonio Jacobsen 1907". At the center of the painting are three schooner yachts all heeling to starboard under full sail. Each schooner is flying the New York Yacht Club burgee and they form a straight line forming a diagonal across the canvas. Along the bottom margin, the yachts are identified in yellow paint from left to right: DAUNTLESS WANDERER IDLER. To the left of the yachts is another two masted schooner sailing straight along the horizon and to the left a square rigged ship sailing on the same tack as the racing schooners. To the right is a two masted steam tug flying a New York Yacht Club burgee and two American flags. Behind the tug is a three masted ship with furl sails and anchor. And to the right at the horizon is a transitional steam-sail ship. The sea is painted in Jacobsen's typical style of this period. The sky is a bright robin's-egg blue filled with puffy white clouds with red and gray highlights. Racing scenes by Antonio Jacobsen are amongst the rarest subjects he painted. (PA-708) Note: The subject of the painting is described in a New York Times article dated Aug. 15, 1874. The article is titled: "THE NEW YORK YACHT CLUB FINISH OF THE ANNUAL CRUISE - THE FINAL RACE".
